What Is Firefly Wedding?
Firefly Wedding (Japanese title Hotaru no Yomeiri) is a romantic thriller set in Japan's Meiji era, adapted from Oreco Tachibana's manga of the same name. If you've seen it called "The Firefly Bride", that's a literal translation of the Japanese title — same story.
Satoko Kirigaya seems to have everything: she's beautiful, the daughter of a nobleman, and at the perfect age to marry. She's also terminally ill, with little time left. Before she can secure a marriage that would redeem her worth in her family's eyes, she becomes the target of a mysterious assassin, Shinpei Gotō. To survive, she makes a desperate proposal — of marriage. The problem: when it comes to love, Shinpei takes "until death do us part" very seriously.

Does Firefly Wedding Have a Happy Ending?
"Firefly Wedding ending" is one of the most-searched phrases about the series — understandable, given that the premise starts with a dying bride and an assassin groom. If that's you, here's the spoiler-free version:
The manga finished its main story in February 2026, so the ending exists and is complete in print (12 volumes out now, with the 13th and final volume arriving October 19, 2026; the English edition comes from VIZ Media). Broadly, readers describe the ending as bittersweet rather than traditionally happy, with deliberate echoes of Romeo and Juliet throughout. It's a story about a short, intense marriage — the title tells you it isn't pretending otherwise.
We won't post specifics here. If you want the full breakdown, the manga's final volume is the source — and going in unspoiled is the better experience.
